Seasonal Autumn Centerpieces and Flowers

autumn centerpiecesAt formal gatherings and dinners, no table is truly complete without a beautiful centerpiece. Centerpieces can be comprised of flowers, candles, and even fruits and nuts. Throughout the centuries, these focal arrangements have taken on different forms. For instance, the Romans used foliage and greens to create their designs, while in the Middle Ages, marzipan figurines were all the rage. In the 18th century, centerpieces were vertical in design, to ave room on the table; but it was in the 19th century that flowers first made their debut.

autumn centerpieces

Floral centerpieces were often created around a theme, based upon the holiday or special event which was being celebrated. This is not too far off our tradition today, when harvest and autumn centerpieces are designed with items which often represent the abundance of the season.

Fall flowers for autumn centerpieces include asters and daisies, roses and lilies, and mums. Popular accent details are cattails, wheat sheaves, foliage, curly willow and birch branches. Our designers may also choose to add such whimsical elements as gourds, fruits such as grapes or apples, and even artichokes.

Popular fall colors are primarily warm and welcoming – rich, deep reds; burnt oranges, and vivid yellows are all used abundantly in autumn centerpieces. Of course, these colors are also perfect for all fall florals, such as October birthday bouquets, or Halloween designs.

When you are looking for beautiful seasonal home decor, look no further than Julia’s Florist in Wilmington. We are happy to provide you with all of the seasonal flowers you’ll need to transform your space this year.

Customarily, when new neighbors moved in, they were greeted by the current residents who introduced themselves and welcomed the new arrivals. Making people feel at home was the goal, and at Julia’s Florist, we think it is a tradition that should always be celebrated. After all, the process of moving can be exceptionally stressful, and settling in can feel daunting and uncertain – a few friendly faces at the front door will be a welcome sight! Whether making a home-cooked meal or sending flowers to grace their new residence – housewarming gifts are a meaningful and kind gesture guaranteed to go a long way in making a house a home.

Amid the chaos of half-empty boxes and unpacked items, there is just something warm and comforting about a colorful bouquet of flowers. The bright and vivid blooms add an air of optimism that allows a house to begin to feel more welcoming. Our grandchildren accept us for ourselves, without rebuke or effort to change us, as no one in our entire lives has ever done, not our parents, siblings, spouses, friends — and hardly ever our own grown children. ~Ruth Goode

Happy September Birthdays

september birthdays When you are celebrating the birthday of someone special to you, the selection of the perfect gift may be inspired by many things. Whether a bouquet which reflects their favorite flower, or a gift which celebrates their personality, sending something to convey your love or friendship is a meaningful gesture. When designing floral bouquets, the team at Julia’s Florist draws inspiration each month from the appropriate birthstone and the birth flower, and in September, we look to the sapphire and the aster.

September Asters: The aster is related to the sunflower and the daisy, and is can be very similar aesthetically. The flower blooms in late summer and early fall, which differentiates it from many other flowers which appear much earlier in the year. This fact alone makes it the perfect seasonal choice for September birthdays. The name “aster” is derived from the Greek word for “star”. Aster feature a center disk comprised of more than 300 miniature flowers, and ray petals (or florets) are arranged in a star shape around the disk.  Asters occur in diverse hues, yet are easily distinguished from other similar varieties  – the central of an aster is always yellow, regardless of the petal’s coloring.

Sapphire Blue Flowers: The vivid sapphire is one of the most coveted gems in the world. Like the aster, it’s name has an astral connection – in fact, it’s name in the Greek means “celestial”. Royalty in ancient cultures wore the stone as a part of their robes, and it was also considered to have divine origins. Sapphires occur naturally in many hues, including shades of green and orange, but it is the iconic brilliant blue which is most valuable and recognized. When designing September birthday bouquets, blue flowers are a unique choice.

There are few flowers which grow in shades of true blue. Flowers such as blue delphinium, blue hydrangea, forget-me-nots, or blue iris are popular choices, but the best choice for September birthdays may be the blue aster, a beautiful flower which reflects both the birthstone and the birth flower of the month.

Julia’s Florist is your best choice in the Wilmington area for birthday bouquets, as well as flowers for any of your special occasions.
