Spring Flowers: Daisies and Hydrangea

Spring flowersSpring is the time of year when plants and flowers emerge from their long winter’s sleep. Some popular garden flowers make beautiful cut flowers – especially Gerbera daisies and hydrangeas. Here at Julia’s Florist, our floral designers are always trying to come up with new and more spectacular arrangements and designs to share with our Wilmington area customers.

Gerbera Daisies

Gerbera daisies are the world’s fifth most popular flower. It’s not hard to see why. These giant daisy-like flowers symbolize cheerfulness, innocence, or purity. The bright colors and flower shape and form, often cheer people up when they’re having a bad day.

The Gerbera daisy was first discovered near Barberton, South Africa in 1884. Robert Jameson, a Scotsman, made the discovery. That is why the scientific name for the flower – Gerbera jamesonii, is a tribute to him. The flower’s common name is a tribute to the famous German-born naturalist, Traugott Gerber.

In 1890, English breeding programs started. The goal was to improve the flower quality and create different colored flowers. Eventually, the Gerbera daisy made its way to The Netherlands, and ultimately to Columbia, the two countries that are now the leading producers of cut Gerbera daisies for the commercial floral market industry.

Colorful Blooms

Hydrangea

Hydrangeas have been popular shrubs for centuries. Originally native to areas in Eastern and Southern Asia, these showy bushes traveled to North and South America, where they naturalized as native plants there. Hydrangeas bloom from early spring until the end of fall.

Most hydrangea flowers are white. Color changes depend on soil H changes. The acidic soil produces blue flowers because of the aluminum that is present in an acidic soil. When the soil has a higher alkaline pH, the plants produce pink or purple flowers. If the soil pH is neutral, the flowers maintain a creamy white or ivory color.

If you’re in search of a gift – whether for Mother’s Day or any other occasion, we’ve got some spectacular choices that will thrill you – or any recipient to whom you want to give them.
