The summer season provides us with many varieties of flowers that are popular year after year. One of these seasonal favorites is the hydrangea, which blooms from late spring to early fall and is the basis for so many of our most beautiful floral arrangements. In fact, the hydrangea is most often used as a “supporting player”. However, this year, Julia’s Florist would like to shine a spotlight on this beautiful and lush flower and suggest that you bring home a few bunches to display on their own. After all, the color palette and generous flower head is more than capable of infusing your space with a refreshing summer ambiance all by itself.
The hydrangea is a resilient and adaptable flower which was first discovered in Japan but now is grown all over the world. One of the most interesting facts regarding the flower involves how it gets its color. Given that there are over 70 varieties of the flower, you might assume that different varieties produce different colors. However, the great majority of hydrangea plants actually rely on the pH balance of the soil to determine the color. An acidic soil will produce a blue flower, while an alkaline soil will produce a pink flower. And in a neutral environment, the same bush can produce many different colors of flower, which is visually stunning. Green hydrangea actually occur as the bloom is maturing and losing its color – but it is still a beautiful design choice.
Hydrangea are very thirsty flowers, and must be given an abundance of water. Cut hydrangea may struggle to get enough water, however, if they begin to wilt, experts say, simply submerge the entire bloom in water for a few minutes – and it should revive just fine.
When decorating for the summer, we recommend giving the hydrangea an opportunity to shine.
