While many think that Sweetest Day is a holiday for romantics – and some have even dubbed it “little Valentine’s Day – the origin and meaning behind the day is actually quite different. In fact, this 100 year old observance was actually established more as a day to perform acts of kindness to friends, colleagues, or even strangers who need encouragement. It is a day to tell people that they matter, that they are important and yes – that they are the sweetest! If you celebrate Sweetest Day, or even if this is the first you are hearing about it – the team at Julia’s Florist thought that you might enjoy the history behind this sweet day.
26,000 Boxes of Chocolate: The very first Sweetest Day involved candy executives in Cleveland, OH, giving away quite a few boxes of chocolate. These gifts were given to orphans and shut-ins primarily. The executives hoped the event would be an annual affair, but came under criticism when their ultimate motivations were questioned. Still, the day has persisted and is still popular across the United States, especially in the Midwest.
