"She loves me, she loves me not..." - the childhood game of puppy love just would not have been possible without the innocence and beauty of the classic daisy. It represents the carefree attitude and clean slate of spring - and the purity of a bright sunny day. In April, the floral world recognizes the daisy as the official birth flower of the month, and it is in that spirit that Julia's Florist celebrates this beautiful spring bloom.
Did You Know? The daisy is from one of the most prolific floral families in the world. It has over 23,000 varieties, grows on 6 of the 7 continents (excluding Antarctica) and represents over 10% of the flowering plants on the globe. We love the happiness and love that animals add to our lives - in fact, in the United States, 75 million dogs and 85 million cats are kept as beloved pets. However, the issues of overpopulation and abandonment are very real. The shelters are full-to-overflowing, and 2.7 million euthanizations of unwanted or surrendered animals take place per year (1.4 million of which are dogs). National Puppy Day was established a decade ago by Coleen Paige, an animal activist hoping to raise awareness and highlight the need for animal lovers to adopt and rescue puppies from shelters. Of course, rescuing more mature dogs saves lives as well, and is especially meaningful as surrendered adult dogs are often very confused and sad about losing their home and family. It's Saint Patrick's Day, and time to celebrate all things green! There are over 36 million people who can claim Irish descent, but whether you are Irish or not, everyone is allowed to claim the nationality for one day. On March 17th, it is a tradition for everyone to participate in the "wearing o' the green" - in fact, it is even acceptable to give a playful pinch to those who refuse to wear the iconic shade on this festive holiday. While some people go with a simple green outfit, others go all out and try to outdo each other at parties and festivities.
If you would like to send a little green spirit to your Celtic friends and family on St. Patrick's Day, you'll need to look no further than Julia's Florist in Wilmington. Our floral designers are ready to create whimsical arrangements that will commemorate the Emerald Isle beautifully. Read More about Sending Green Flowers on St. Patrick’s Day »

While in Wilmington we don't deal with the snow and cold weather that other parts of the country do, we still look forward to spring. Along with the new season comes the greener grass and trees, the brighter skies, the warmer temperatures, and the incredible colors of the blooming flowers. The floral designers at Julia's Florist are excited to create the freshest bouquets and arrangements with these blossoms - and thought you might like to see what you can expect as we leave winter behind!
The First Flowers: Although some hardy ground covers do bloom earlier, the first true flower to announce the arrival of the spring is the crocus. This bulb flower has been growing underground all winter, and can barely wait to poke its head up through the soil - often when snow is still evident. If you see this small, colorful flower, you can be sure winter's days are numbered. Read More about It’s the Season for Spring Flowers »

International Women's Day has been gaining global acceptance since its origination in the early 1900's, when a group of women in the Soviet Bloc nations organized to demand basic human rights. The movement picked up momentum in the 1970's when the United Nations legitimized the initiative. This year, online forums and virtual gatherings will increase the reach of the participants. The original purpose of the day was to battle social injustice, and to strive for equality and rights for women. In many nations of the world, those are still the main needs. Here in the West, the day has become a time to honor the achievements of women in all levels of culture. This March 8th, we will once again give esteem to the visionaries that paved the way, as well as the women currently taking on these challenges. Carl Rittner founded his Boston School of Floral Design nearly seven decades ago, with a vision of inspiring students to see floral design as a legitimate art form. Recognized as a pioneer in the industry and a true visionary, Rittner was adored by his students, who were eager to find a meaningful way to honor him. Floral Design Day was instituted on February 28th, 1995, designated an official Boston celebration. However, the idea has since spread across the country. The day is seen as an opportunity for the industry to recognize their own professionals, who use their artistic talent and creative imagination to make the world a little more beautiful every day. Each year in February, there is a global celebration of generosity, compassion, and goodwill. The origination of Random Acts of Kindness Day is not known for sure, with some crediting folks in Denver and others a young man in New Zealand. Regardless of how it started, it does seem to be inspired by the phrase “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty,” which was coined by Anne Herbert in the 1980s. Celebrating spontaneous acts and small but meaningful gestures, the holiday gives people an opportunity to share kindness alongside people all across the country, and around the world. At Julias Florist, we know that the world can always use a little more beauty - it is what we do every day! And we are eager to assist you in all of your good deeds this February 17th.
