Want to win Secret Santa this year? We at Julia's Florist can help.
Okay, you can't actually win Secret Santa, the group gift swap where the gifter conceals their identity from the giftee. But you can provide a thoughtful, crowd-pleasing gift that no one could possibly turn down. Instead of going the joke route - or the bottle of wine route - elect to give something that will have all the other participants swooning. Read More about Sweeten Up Your Secret Santa Gift »

One of the most exciting parts about Thanksgiving - at least to us here at Julia's Florist - is what goes on the dining table. No, we don't mean food, though the feast itself certainly gets top billing at our house. It's the flowers, and specifically, the centerpiece.
What you put in the middle of your table is meant to capture the spirit of your Thanksgiving, whether you're hosting an informal potluck where everybody brings their signature dish or a more formal affair. Centerpieces are meant to be enjoyed and remarked upon. They have to be lovely but not distracting. And your guests have to be able to talk over them, so keep those pieces long and low, we say. Where will you be spending Turkey Day? If you're like nearly 50 million people last year, you'll be traveling 50 miles or more over hill and dale to be around the table with the ones you love come November 23. And since it isn't your table you'll be gathered around, you'll want to remember to bring something else with you, along with that side item of green bean casserole or stuffing: a host gift.
We here at Julia's Florist are never short of ideas when it comes to gifts; in fact, this mission plays to our strengths. The classic host gift is flowers, of course. But which? Read More about Gifts of Gratitude for the Host »

Veterans Day is just around the corner, and here in Wilmington, we're preparing a bevy of tributes, from parades to observances to personal celebrations in our homes. Our community is rich with heroes, those who served in the U.S. military and spent much of their lives protecting and defending our country. We owe them every parade in the book, but here at Julia's Florist, we think we owe them flowers, too.
While Veterans Day doesn't have a designated flower, we have some contenders, all of them within that patriotic red, white, and blue palette we enjoy during those occasions when we honor our country. Read More about Red, White and Blue for Veterans Day »

Can we talk mums for a minute?
November's ubiquitous golden blooms start appearing in October, mostly because we're all so excited to herald the arrival of Fall (unless it's just us at Julia's Florist, but we don't think so). We've been stacking container mums on our front steps, nestling them around our front door or planting them straight into our flower beds come Fall for what seems forever. Why are they so popular? For starters, they are frost-tolerant. Secondly, they love shorter days. Treated properly, they'll last through Thanksgiving. And oh yeah, they're really pretty. Read More about A Moment for Mums »

The days are shorter and cooler here in Wilmington as the holiday season is upon us. What better kick-off to this bountiful, starkly beautiful time of year than Halloween? While you wait for little ghouls and goblins to clutter your doorstep, spend some time considering how you'll make your seasonal decor feel fresh and new this year. When you're placing the pumpkins, gourds and cornucopias, be sure to include some harvest flowers into your designs.
Julia's Florist has a range of options that will enliven your living space during the long, dark nights and look stellar when illuminated by a crackling fire or flickering candles. Read More about Harvest Flowers and Home Decor »

While many think that Sweetest Day is a holiday for romantics - and some have even dubbed it "little Valentine's Day - the origin and meaning behind the day is actually quite different. In fact, this 100 year old observance was actually established more as a day to perform acts of kindness to friends, colleagues, or even strangers who need encouragement. It is a day to tell people that they matter, that they are important and yes - that they are the sweetest! If you celebrate Sweetest Day, or even if this is the first you are hearing about it - the team at Julia's Florist thought that you might enjoy the history behind this sweet day. In 1958, a Chicago-based State Farm Insurance employee named Patricia Bays Haroski came up with the idea of National Boss's Day. The observance was meant to enhance and improve the relationships between employers and their employees. It took 4 years for the day to become official, the declaration signed by Illinois Governor Lott Kerner in 1962. Since that time, the day has been recognized not only across the United States, but also in India, Australia, and South Africa. Read More about Celebrating Wilmington’s Best Bosses »
